BIOGRAPHY - An unlikely rags-to-riches story, A.J. Morales transformed himself over the course of nearly a decade from a walking tornado of anger, unsure what to do or where to go after overwhelming waves of gentrification priced him out of his home city of San Francisco, to an international phenomenon who made his TV debut for XWA in early 2017 and never looked back. This insurgent rockstar luchador has won the hearts of audiences around the world with his innovative offense, unforgettable matches, and refusal to back down to any would-be tyrants of the industry.
A.J.'s history with NVR goes all the way back to its developmental days, when he was holding the Seattle Pro Wrestling Pride Championship and mentoring a young prospect by the name of Tenshi Van Santana. But as TV contract disputes sidelined Tenshi and NVR began to evolve into what it is now, Morales began to step in the ring himself, first on Seattle Pro business, then as part of a months-long feud with Jimmy Pagan over the NVR Heavyweight Championship. After Morales defeated Pagan in a brutal steel cage match to take the title, his first top title in any promotion, Morales quickly set about making defenses in England and Japan to help elevate it to its current status as the NVR World Championship. Things would only escalate from there, as he racked up defenses in four more countries, added the SFW World Championship for good measure (even if he didn't get to unify his two world titles like he wanted), and won the NVR Tag Team Championships with Christina Idol, making them the first NVR Tag Team Champions and Morales the first double-champion in NVR history. Things finally came full-circle in September 2019, as he dropped the NVR World title to Red Tiger Kid (soon to be rechristened Red Tiger King) in a steel cage match, capping off a historic 200-day, 10-defense reign, both of which still stand as NVR records.
Not long after dropping the belt, Morales struck the deciding blow in the war between NVR and Seattle Pro, scoring the pin in the 5-on-5 tag match at Fusion in Madison Square Garden to ensure Seattle Pro couldn't win the night. He was also one of five entrants in the Trick or Treat match at Halloween Horror Fights, where he became the first person to claim the R!ZE Championship Trick or Treat briefcase. And while all that was going on, he iced the SFW world title and created an independent San Francisco Openweight Championship, which he would defend exclusively in NVR and eventually sell to the company just days before dropping the title to Arley Kirk at Human Fights Day. And despite a rough patch in the early goings of 2020, including losing a brutal deathmatch to Diego Matias at Lovers in a Dangerous Time, Morales turned it all around in May when, at Smaller Than Average, he yoinked the R!ZE Championship away from six other wrestlers via mid-match cash-in, completing the first NVR Grand Slam in history in the process.
